Got questions for us?

Whether you're brand new to D&D or just new to Dragonworks, you'll find your answers here.

Getting Started

Not at all. Plenty of our players had never touched D&D before their first session. Your DM walks you through everything, builds your character with you, and the rest of the table is there to help.

Browse our available games to find one that fits your schedule. When you're ready, message Satsa (@Satsa) or post in the greetings channel with the team you'd like to join, and we'll get you set up. If you're not sure about the exact game, just join our Discord regardless and we'll help you.

You play online together on a website with full maps, art, and music, and all your dice rolls happen right there on screen. Voice chat is on Discord, an online chat platform, and you can keep your character sheet on either Roll20 or D&D Beyond, which are websites through which you can play D&D. Webcam optional. We'd recommend joining from a computer for the best experience. All you really need is a headset and a device with a big enough screen.

Every team has its own personality, so pick the one that you like the most. Descriptions of teams are included on the Find a Game page. Choose a team at a time you can join consistently most weeks, as that is how D&D is played. It's normal to miss a few sessions here and there, that happens to everyone. If you're brand new to D&D, a newly opened team where everyone starts together is the easiest way to start having fun playing D&D. If you join a team further along in its adventure, your DM will get you up to speed and give your character extra items and boons so you're at the same power level as the rest of the party. Not sure which team to pick? Just join our Discord and we'll help you find the right one. And if a team turns out not to fit, reach out anytime and we'll move you to a better one.

Choose what would make you excited to play. Then work together with your DM to integrate it to the story at hand. Before character creation, it's worth browsing the Player's Guide for inspiration, so your concept fits the world and story and you get the most out of it. Also ask your DM about House Rules (starting gold, is homebrew allowed, etc). Your DM will listen to your ideas and preferences, help you build a character that belongs in the setting, and tie personal plot hooks into the campaign so you've got a real stake from the start.

You'll be added to the team's Roll20 and Discord channel and be introduced to your DM and the other players. Your DM then sets up a session zero to hear your ideas, help you build your character, and make notes about what you're looking for from the game. A team needs at least four players to launch, so if you're joining one that's still filling up, you'll all finalize your characters before the adventure begins. If you're joining an established team, your DM gets you up to speed individually. You're now ready to start playing!

Absolutely. If you and your friends want to play together, we can place you on the same team. Just let us know when you join and we'll sort it out.

Payments and Fairness Policy

Sessions are priced by the subscription you choose, and your first week is always free. Pay weekly at $19 a session, monthly at $76 (about $17.5 a session), or quarterly at $216 ($16.5 a session). The longer the plan, the less you pay per game.

Yes and yes. Your session zero and your entire first week are completely free, character creation included. You only start paying when you continue past that. If you decide it's not for you, you don't pay a thing.

We understand that life can get in the way and it happens to everyone. You are entitled to a refund if you let the DM know ahead of time that you can't make it, or if the DM cancels the session. As your refund, your next session is free, though a direct monetary refund is also possible. Contact our Community Assistant @DimenSean to receive your refund.

You can start the payment through the links in our Payments and Fairness Policy. The payment process is called Stripe. When subscribing, choose a weekly, monthly, or quarterly plan from the payment links, select your preferred currency, and enter your payment details. Your subscription activates immediately and renews automatically according to the billing cycle you chose. You can change or cancel your subscription at any time. Dragonworks does not store or have access to your credit or debit card information, those details remain securely with the payment processor.

Rules, Teams, and Content

Most sessions run 3 to 4 hours, set by your DM and group. Some groups prefer shorter sessions, so the exact length is something your table settles on together.

It's up to each DM, and labelled next to each team. Many of our teams have run for years on the original Dungeons & Dragons 5e rules, while newer teams usually use the updated 5.5e ruleset. Some also use character options from both, and those are marked as "Mixed." When you browse a team, you'll know which it uses, so you can pick what you're comfortable with.

Each DM runs their own table, and a single DM may run several. Every campaign is its own separate story, existing in its own continuity, so what happens at one table never affects another. This allows you and your teammates to be the heroes of your own story. Different teams share the same foundation of Legacy of Alabaster, but each unfolds in their own way depending on the DM's creativity, and the players' backstories and actions. No two are ever quite the same. Some DMs love writing extra content or changing the base campaign substantially. Some players' choices change the world to such an extent that it's effectively an entirely different campaign.

Yes, and quite a few players are already doing so. Though you have to keep in mind to understand the underlying story is likely the same. Yet the team dynamics and characters are what makes it unique. You also have to be careful to avoid revealing spoilers, or change other things. Please also try not to deny other players the ability to experience the base campaign by trying to steer them away from it. They haven't yet played it and unlike you don't know what's going to happen. You will also need a corresponding amount of subscriptions for each game you play.

They're just flavorful labels chosen by each DM, and don't affect gameplay. With so many teams running at once, the names merely make them easy to tell apart. Pick the team that suits your schedule and playstyle.

It depends on the DM. Teams labelled "Homebrew Allowed" welcome it in principle, but each DM decides what they'll approve, since some homebrew is wildly unbalanced, poorly written, or only fits a very specific campaign. We want you to be able to play the character you want. At the same time, it's a team game, and part of the DM's job is keeping everyone on a level playing field so each player gets their moment to shine. That's why DMs have full authority to approve, reject, or modify any homebrew brought into the campaign. Flavor, though, is always allowed. For example, you can reflavor a hand crossbow into a handgun using the same mechanics. And if you want ready-made extra options, our Player's Guide includes official homebrew built for the setting: Theme Feats, custom weapons, and spells you can choose from.

Comfort and Values

We value your safety and comfort. The exact tools used vary by DM. Some use tools like lines and veils, or wish and star, while others simply talk it through during session zero. The most important thing: if something makes you uncomfortable, speak up or send a private message to the DM so your DM can adjust the content and help you solve the issues you have. We want every player to feel safe at the table.

We believe in real art made by real people. That's why we don't knowingly use AI art. If we ever discover AI art in our game, we will swiftly remove it.
